Record Clearance Workshop
In partnership with DLA Piper LLP and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company, Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto has started a new workshop in San Mateo County to help eligible juveniles and adults dismiss or seal their criminal records. Record dismissal workshops take place on a monthly basis. Pre-screened clients meet with volunteers one-on-one to complete their record dismissal petitions.
Through the criminal record dismissal process, individuals who have committed offenses and then served time in county jail or a period of probation can legally apply to have these past offenses dismissed in their criminal record. Applying for dismissal is a legal right. However, it is not pursued by many people with eligible convictions who could benefit from it due to lack of awareness and/or inadequate resources. Having one’s record expunged greatly increases the chances of being hired because potential employers should not be able to see dismissed convictions on private background checks. Dismissing one’s record helps improve economic productivity and increases tax revenue and offers an incentive to individuals not to re-offend.
We require potential clients to bring in a copy of their Criminal History Record from the California Department of Justice. More information about how to obtain your Criminal History Record can be found here.
