Small Business Program
Our Small Business Program helps low-income small businesses, non-profit organizations and emerging entrepreneurs, who otherwise could not afford to see a lawyer, take their business to the next level. We also support new ones get started on the right foot. We offer:
- Legal Clinics – Eligible* clients have the opportunity to speak briefly to an experienced attorney on their business issue for free. These attorneys have significant experience in assisting emerging companies and are therefore uniquely positioned to advise small business owners on a range of issues, including, but not limited to, choosing a business entity, tax, contract negotiation, and intellectual property and trademark. In most cases, issues are resolved at the clinic. If further representation is deemed necessary and the client continues to be eligible for our services, we may place a case for full representation with one of our pro bono partners.
- Workshops – Our presentations provide general overviews on the legal issues relevant to building or sustaining a business. These business-related legal topics range from ‘How to choose abusiness entity’, ‘Intellectual Property and Trademark,’ and ‘Being your own boss.’ They are scheduled throughout the year, in various locations throughout the Peninsula.
*Clients interested in our clinics must be screened in order to determine eligibility. Because our mission focuses on providing transformative services to the low-income community, we give preference to low-income small businesses or ventures that impact societies and communities in positive ways.
